What is Carlow/ Kilkenny Young Parent Support Programme?

The YPSP is a free confidential service for young people up to 24 years, in Carlow and Kilkenny who are pregnant or are parents, and for children up to 3 years. The programme also offers support to the young person’s partner and extended families.

How does it work?

Referrals can be made from pregnancy up until the child’s third birthday. Referrals can be made by parents themselves, their family members or professionals.

A Project Worker will meet you on a one-to-one basis (or with someone else if you wish) during pregnancy and for 3 years after the birth of your baby.  You can discuss your concerns and needs with the project worker who will support you in whatever areas you need it.

The Project Worker can meet you in your home, the YPSP office or at another location of your choice.

What kind of supports?

This will depend on what you need. It may be:

  • information about how to take care of yourself and your baby
  • support with being a parent
  • information on your child’s development
  • information about accommodation
  • information on your welfare rights and entitlements
  • information on your rights as the baby’s father or mother
  • information and advice about childcare
  • support to remain in education or training – if that is your choice
  • support to return to education or training
  • linking you with other young parents.

The Project Worker will know the other services in your area and, if you wish, can speak to them on your behalf.

This Carlow/Kilkenny YPSP is part of the National Young Parents Support Programme, run in partnership with TUSLA and St Catherine’s Community Services Centre, Carlow.
