A new report highlighted in the Westmeath Examiner shows something many parents already feel in their gut โ€” children are entering the digital world very young, and families are struggling to keep up with the pace of change.
You can read the full story here:
The survey and youth workshop findings paint a clear picture:
โ€ข Children first using smart devices as young as 4โ€“6
โ€ข First smartphones at 7โ€“8 years old
โ€ข Teens spending 4+ hours a day on social media
โ€ข Worries around harmful or inappropriate content
โ€ข Parents feeling โ€œoutpacedโ€ and looking for more support
โ€ข Many unsure how platforms actually work or who sees their childโ€™s content
Young people also spoke about the positives โ€” learning, creativity, communication โ€” but they want safer spaces, stronger protections, and better guidance from adults.
At #NPC, weโ€™re hearing the same thing from parents across the country:
โ€œWe want to help our children, but the online world is moving faster than we are.โ€
To support families, weโ€™re running free Internet Safety Information Sessions for Primary School Parents from 8โ€“12 December 2025.
These sessions will help you:
โ€ข Understand what children are actually encountering online
โ€ข Start more open chats at home
โ€ข Set boundaries that work without causing rows
โ€ข Recognise the signs of online pressure or harm
โ€ข Build your confidence in dealing with digital issues
